Get involved

Every month, Turn the Tide hosts The Portishead Big Clean.

On the last weekend of every month, we collectively gather as much litter as we can all across Portishead beaches, roads, and hedgerows, over the two days.

Whether or not you have litter picked before, everyone is invited on these litter picks. It’s a chance to get involved and help keep the rubbish out of Portishead and our oceans.
Our volunteers find that the Big Cleans give them a good reason to get out in the fresh air and do their bit for the environment. A Big Clean is also a great family-friendly activity to do with children of all ages, we’ve even made a game of bingo out of it!

When taking part, we highly recommend that you use gloves (even if you are using a litter picker) and a hi-vis jacket for your safety. Then all you need is a bit of enthusiasm and a bin bag to collect any litter you find.

If you aren’t sure where to start, take a look at our Hot Spot map; these are areas that we have highlighted as ‘locations that need that extra bit of attention’.

We are looking forward to seeing you out and about at our next Big Clean weekend.
Don’t forget to let us know via our survey on Facebook how many bags you fill, we love to total up and share our communities’ great work!

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Turn The Tide Portishead offer the opportunity for local young people to complete the volunteering section of this award.

In the Bronze and Silver sections we monitor their litter picking activities for the required time while providing safety guidelines and equipment.

In the Gold section they can also mentor the Bronze and Silver students during their period of volunteering.
We work closely with the Gordano School lead on this and always seek the consent of parents, guardians and carers of any young person who wish to volunteer with us.

Take a look at our leaflet for further information.
